Who was killed, by whom, where and when

Women Count USA is the only systematic record in the country of women and girls killed by men and boys. Dawn Wilcox has built it by hand since 2016 from news reports, court records, social media and obituaries. It runs from the 1950s to this year, in fifteen working databases. They are shown here exactly as she publishes them, not copied.

The databases, year by year

Pick a year. The table opens inside this page with every column Dawn Wilcox records: her age, her race, the relationship, his age, cause of death, location type, case status and the sources for each case. Filter and sort inside the table.

Your tally

Filter any table above, read the record count at the bottom of the grid, and log it here with the filter you used. The counts stay in your browser, chart by year, export as a file, and carry into the lost-earnings ledger. The database is never copied; the counting is yours.

Counts are stored only in this browser. Record what you counted and the date on the methodology page's terms: a count is a floor, entries are at various stages of completion, and the live tables change daily.

The questions we are asking of the data

Each card names a question, the columns that answer it, and how the answer will be shown once aggregation is agreed with Women Count USA and CATW. Until then the embedded tables above are the analysis surface.

How old were they?

Age at death, in bands, for all victims and for New York. Girls under 18 separately.

HER AGEDATESTATE
Shown as: a histogram you can switch between the whole country and New York, with the median marked.

Who was the perpetrator?

Relationship to the victim grouped into intimate partner, family, acquaintance, stranger, commercial sexual exploiter and unknown. His age and race where recorded.

RELATIONSHIPHIS AGEHIS RACE / ETH
Shown as: a relationship wheel. Click a segment to see age and case-status breakdowns for that group.

Where were they?

State and city for every case; the database also keeps an address field for mapping.

STATECITYADDRESS FOR MAPPING
Shown as: a map of New York State with one point per case, clustered by county, and a national comparison by state rate per 100,000 women.

Were they killed in the sex trade?

The database codes commercial sexual exploitation as a relationship type and as an additional detail. These are the cases New York does not count anywhere.

RELATIONSHIPADDITIONAL DETAILSKEYWORDS
Shown as: a count by year and state, and how each case was described in the press.

What patterns repeat?

Prior protective orders, strangulation history, threats to kill, break-ups in the weeks before, murder-suicide, firearms.

KEYWORDSCAUSE OF DEATHMURDER-SUICIDE
Shown as: a co-occurrence grid. Which warning signs appear together, and how often the system had already been warned.

What happened to the case?

Conviction, pending, suspect deceased, unsolved, declined indictment, mishandled.

CASE STATUS / DETAILSSENTENCE
Shown as: outcomes for sex-trade cases against all other cases.

Why the aggregated charts are not live yet

Women Count USA is copyrighted material built by one person. Before this project copies, re-codes and republishes it as an open dataset, Dawn Wilcox and CATW need to agree to the terms. The fetch script and coding rules are ready in the repository and described on the methodology page so they can be reviewed first.
