The Section Problem

Every argument about why DUMBO is loud is an argument about a cross-section: where the track sits, what stands between it and a person in a park, and what the structure does with the energy in between. This tool draws that section for both East River rail crossings — and marks every single line with how much we actually know about it.

The premise. A rendering is not evidence. A model built from photographs and reasonable guesses looks exactly as authoritative as one built from measured drawings, and that is an epistemic hazard, not a presentation problem. So every component here carries two independent fields, and conflating them is the mistake this tool exists to prevent.

Geometry provenance — what supports the shape drawn: measured documented inferred assumed. Verification state — how deeply the source was read, the same scale used for citations in the written research: verified snippet unverified.

A source can be fully verified and still support no geometry at all — a sentence establishing that an element exists says nothing about where it is. Switch the assumed geometry off and see what is left, then note that switching off the inferred geometry too leaves nothing.

      What the two sections are for

      The written research proposes a matched-pair measurement study because these two bridges hold almost everything constant — same owner, same operator, same trains, same statute, same river — and move one variable: where the track sits. On the Williamsburg Bridge the rails run down the middle with roadway decks on either side. On the Manhattan Bridge they hang off the outside edges with nothing between them and the neighbourhood.

      That is a shielding hypothesis, and it is testable. But look at what colour the relevant components are. The single most important geometric fact for the hypothesis — whether the flanking roadway decks actually stand between the rail and a receptor below — is inferred, not verified. No section drawing of either bridge was located in public sources. Which is the finding this tool exists to make visible.
